Oral Health & Your Liver

Liver disease doesn’t just affect your overall health, it can also impact your oral health.

The liver helps clean your blood, process nutrients, and support your immune system. When it isn’t working properly, it can make it harder for your body to fight infections, including those in your mouth.

People with liver disease may be more likely to develop gum disease, with symptoms like red or bleeding gums and bad breath. Dry mouth is also common, which increases the risk of tooth decay because there is less saliva to protect the teeth. Healing after dental treatment may take longer, and there may be a higher risk of bleeding or infection. Some people may also notice mouth sores or changes in their tongue.

Regular dental check-ups are important, especially if you have liver disease. Watch out for signs like bleeding gums, ongoing dry mouth, sensitive teeth, or sores that don’t heal.

There are simple steps you can take to protect your oral health.

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
  • Clean between your teeth every day
  • Choose a healthy diet and limit sugary foods and drinks
  • Seeing your dentist regularly can help catch problems early.

Understanding the link between liver health and oral health can help you take better care of your whole body.
